Construction sites are among the most targeted properties in South Africa. Open perimeters, valuable plant, copper and building materials, and long periods of inactivity at night and over weekends make them attractive to opportunistic thieves and organised syndicates alike. Every loss costs more than replacement value: it delays the programme, triggers penalties and can put workers at risk.
Here is a ten-point checklist to reduce risk on your site.
1. Start with a risk assessment
Before the first guard is posted, assess the site: neighbouring land use, crime trends, access routes, laydown areas, plant and stock values, and how the risk will change as the build progresses.
2. Secure the perimeter early
Erect hoarding or fencing as soon as possible, with as few entry points as practical. Every gap is a potential exit for stolen materials.
3. Control every vehicle and person
Use a single controlled gate with sign-in registers for staff, subcontractors, visitors and deliveries. Check vehicles leaving the site, not only those entering.
4. Keep plant, tool and material registers
Record what comes in and what goes out. Regular reconciliation exposes shrinkage early and discourages collusion.
5. Light it up
Good lighting at the perimeter, laydown yard and site offices deters intruders and helps guards and cameras see.
6. Patrol unpredictably
Static guards should be supported by roving patrols on random routes and schedules, with hourly check-ins to a control room.
7. Protect high-value items
Lock away cable, copper, tools and fuel in secure containers, immobilise plant overnight and consider tracking devices on mobile equipment.
8. Add eyes in the sky
On large or remote sites, drones with thermal cameras can patrol the perimeter in minutes and spot intruders in complete darkness. K9 teams add powerful deterrence after hours.
9. Plan for holidays and weekends
Builders’ holidays and long weekends are high-risk periods. Increase guarding and patrols when the site is quiet.
10. Demand reporting
Insist on daily occurrence reports and monthly management reports, so you can see what is happening and act on trends.
